In this novella from Herman Ad\u00e8r, the autobiographical elements are more<\/span>obvious than in his previous novellas and stories. Yet, the first-person narrator is<\/span>nowhere centre stage, the father and the mother remain the main characters all<\/span>along. However, this detached manner of writing emphasizes how very evocative<\/span>various scenes are. It could be said that the novella deals with Death. With the<\/span>\u00a0sudden death of the father, and with the slow, painful deterioration of the<\/span>\u00a0mother into her dementia, followed by death. Yet it is not a sad novella. This is<\/span>\u00a0caused by the indestructible cheerfulness that the mother possesses, which<\/span>\u00a0never leaves her, not even at the end of her life, when she hardly recognizes<\/span>\u00a0anyone and her world becomes ever more limited. It is as if people near her<\/span>suffer more in the end than she does herself. The novella \u2018Father, mother,\u2019 is<\/span>translated from the Dutch novella \u2018Vader, Moeder\u2019, also published by Johannes van<\/span>Kessel.<\/span><\/p>\n
